Drainage - check to see if drainage is installed, if so check to make sure it is working. If no drainage is installed, consider a complete or localised installation. Irrigation - Absolutely key to a healthy grass plant! Lack of moisture during hot dry periods will cause plant stress, dry patch and hydrophobic conditions. Recovery from this can be up to or in excess of 12 months. Shade - Shady conditions will reduce the ability of the plant to photosynthise, creating a weaker sward. Air Movement - A good air movement flow will help keep the surface dry, and reduce risk of disease. Nutrient programme - Implement a nutritional programme based on grass type, rootzone, and purpose of use. Disease & Pests IPM (Integrated Pest Management) - Implement an IPM programme taking into consideration grass species, rootzone, plant health. Roots - Encourage root development by nutrition, aeration and moisture content. Grass Type - Identify your grass species i.e. Bent, Fescue, Rye, Poa, or select your seed mixture for sowing, taking into consideration soil type, purpose of use, maintenance and irrigation. Quality of Cut - Maintain your mowing equipment and most importantly keep blades sharp to minimise damage to the grass leaf, which increases risk of disease and stress to the plant. Soil Type - Identify your soil make up i.e. sandy loam, loam, clay, USGA rootzone. Implement an aeration programme to minimise compaction, maximise air pores for root development and to aid drainage. Thatch - Identify your thatch levels and either plan to reduce thickness of thatch or maintain acceptable thatch levels by scarification, hollow coring etc. Grass Plant Health - Nutrition, a healthy rootzone, and moisture are key to a healthy plant. Dew - Remove dew daily to minimise disease pressure. Weeds - Identify the weed type and apply a suitable selective weed killer when the grass/weeds are actively growing.
